City of Bécancour

Ville de BécancourThe town of Becancour is located on the Saint-Laurent plain, in the Centre du Quebec region, at the intersection of major roads. Becancour was one of Québec's first amalgamated cities. The town was created on October 17, 1965 from the amalgamation of eleven municipalities spread out over 434 km2 and is now the largest town in Quebec in terms of area.

The six areas, which now constitute the urban area, reveal, each in their own way, the history of a region whose economic vocation went rapidly from farming to heavy industry. The six secteurs are: Bécancour, Gentilly, Saint-Grégoire, Sainte-Angèle, Sainte-Gertrude and Précieux-Sang.

In 1968 the idea of an industrial park was put forward. It would take some time for this new project to bring new hope. The Seventies and Eighties saw major companies finally settling into the park thus making the most of numerous strategic, geographic, energy and economic benefits.

From the last twenty five years until the present day, Becancour's imposing industrial park and port have given the municipality international recognition of which the economic effects can be noted in all areas: housing development, trade, road networks, and thereby, cultural, sporting and community activities.

Farming is also an important industry sector in Bécancour. Thriving farms, a variety of crops as well as different products reflect the richness of the land.

Parisville

Municipalité de ParisvilleThe charming town of Parisville, founded in 1901, is located at the Eastern end of the RCM of Bécancour in the Centre-du-Québec region and is approximately five kilometers from the Saint-Laurent river. It occupies an area of around 37 square kilometers with a population of just over five hundred people.

It's economy, mainly driven by the farming industry, reaps the benefits of rich soil, used by various agricultural and dairy farms. There are also several breeding farms, a nursery, maple groves and a blueberry farm, all supported by the regional agricultural cooperative.

It was the railway, which was inaugurated in the late twentieth century, that lead to the parish of Parisville being founded and was a major factor in its expansion.

In 2008 the municipality opened Le Petit Deschaillons, a magnificent linear park, much to the delight of outdoor enthusiasts. With its footpaths and cycle track more than five kilometers long, this park was created at the site of the old railway station. A railway and cultural heritage museum of the region is housed in the park's visitor welcome center, with exhibitions on display in an authentic caboose.

This small, dynamic municipality is ideal for those who prefer to settle in a calm and peaceful location with warm, welcoming neighbors.

Sainte-Marie-de-Blandford

Located in the central part of the RCM of Bécancour, the municipality of Sainte-Marie de Blandford is the result of the 1976 amalgam of the municipality of the parish of Sainte-Marie de Blandford, founded in 1873 and the municipality of the village of Sainte-Marie, officially established in 1957.

Among the features that characterize this municipality is the Parc de la rivière Gentilly, which provides an idyllic setting thanks to its two rivers and lush vegetation. There is an array of activities to do such as fishing, hiking and riding trails, river swimming, a fitness trail, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing as well as various types of camping.

Ongoing projects include a 3.6 km hiking trail of an environmentally friendly, educational and teaching nature.

The creation of different information panels will emphasize wetlands and make it into an eco-tourism site, ranked fourth for it's plant diversity and wildlife, and this spread over more than 600 recorded wetlands in south-west Quebec. Lastly, this project will enable schools to discover the wealth of fauna and flora in wetlands.
